What we're about in BDJH TheatreHere at Beckendorff we focus on inspiring, students to become life long learners. We take that to heart in the BDJH theatre department as we focus on creating theatre, rather than just sitting around talking about it. We focus on a hands on approach while teaching the fundamentals of theatre all while focusing on the state standards for theatre education. Here at Beckendorff we strive for success and excellence, but welcome the moments when we fail because through those moments, we find opportunities to grow.
We hope everyone who is involved in our theatre program in any way finds their opportunities to grow, and be inspired. |
How our program works |
How a student can get involved |
Our program is set to build with each year that a student takes a theatre class at Beckendorff Junior High. Ideally, as a student enters 6th grade at BDJH, their classes will immediately begin to scaffold up towards the 7th grade level, and from there to the 8th grade level. We have several performances within classes and focus on the hands on approach to teaching theatre.
Within our classes we recognize that EVERY student is a different person. We don't expect to see the same work from every student because, just like society is structured, everyone is a different person and interprets things differently. Theatre arts focus heavily on differentiation within the classroom. Some students may have taken theatre for the first time in their lives, and in the same class, we may have some students who have been a part of theatre programs outside of BDJH for years. So we aim to create a learning, and challenging environment for all sorts of students in our classes. We also understand, and are realistic, that not every student will continue on with theatre arts after our class. Not everyone can become a movie or Broadway star. So we also focus on highlighting the real world implications of the content we teach to the students to develop the life skills such as public speaking, collaboration, empathy, and creative problem solving. In the end, leaving a bit of something for everyone to take away from the theatre classroom. |
Other that being enrolled in classes we offer several different opportunities for students to be involved in the BDJH theatre program. We have school wide auditions for our Fall show and our Spring musical, along with the potential for small performance opportunities throughout the year. Students can also interview to be a part of the technical crew to learn the "behind the scenes" aspects of theatre and gain skills in those areas prior to getting to high school. Of course the easiest way for anyone to get involved with BDJH theatre is to simply come out and see the shows! It might not seem like much, but just coming out and watching the work of other students helps build up our program and spread the word of the great talent we have here at Beckendorff.

MS. Rose Marie SagerHello, my name is Rose Marie Sager. I am excited to be the new theatre director! This is my 14th year teaching. I have recently spent the last 10 years here in KISD teaching Challenge. I thrive at challenging students to step out of their comfort zone and believe in their own abilities. Theatre is one of my passions. I have done everything from acting, directing, writing, stage manager, prop manager, set design, etc… I am excited to inspire that same passion for theatre in my students!
